Leadership Management Development Programs
An insight into management development programs from IEDP
“Management development programs ” can mean two distinct things. It can be a generic catchall phrase for any management development program or course including mba leadership development – and include all levels of managerial experience from the most junior to senior board members, and cover all the various different functional disciplines of finance, strategy, marketing, operations, negotiation, corporate governance etc.
In the context of executive education as we use it at IEDP it also has a more specific meaning. It can also refer to those programs that are generalist in nature, traditionally this would be MBAs and Executive MBAs (EMBA) at the broadest level and progressing onto pure executive programs such as GMPs and AMPs.
General Management Development Programs (GMPs)
General Management Programs are mini-MBAs offered intensively over a two to six week period for fast track executives, typically they will be in their late 20s or early-to-mid 30s and have around five years management experience. Most business schools will offer these general programs, Cranfield, Harvard, IEDC – Bled and ESCP-Europe all offer programs with this exact title. INSEAD calls its version the International Executive Program and a Management Acceleration Program, Darden offers it Management Development Program, IMD has its Program for Executive Development, ESADE its Programme for Executive Development. Warwick runs its Business Leaders Programme, Nyenrode mba leadership development.
Advanced Management Programs (AMPs)
For more experienced executives providers will offer programs that cover similar ground but at a higher level – the Advanced Management Programs. Most leading schools offer this program (often alternatively called Senior Management/Executive Programs). IESE runs versions each year in Warsaw, Munich and the Middle East; Instituto Empresa has its version as does Columbia and London Business School.
Shorter Management Programs
Certain providers run even shorter programs of a week or less as an introduction to some of the elements that are encompassed in the more comprehensive courses. Ashridge runs a short Introduction to Management program, IEEI in Cairo offer a two-day seminar on “Leadership in Action”, Other providers offer general programs but for specific industry sectors such as MCE who runs their five-day mini-MBA focused specifically for Pharmaceutical executives.
